What BMW iDrive system does my vehicle have?

Content:

What BMW iDrive system does my vehicle have? In many of today’s BMW vehicles, the majority of secondary vehicle systems are managed by the iDrive computer system.

Uncertain about the version you have? To learn more, consult the table below.

iDrive First Generation

This is the iDrive prototype at its most basic. The iDrive computer, which is exclusive to these vehicles, consists of four independent modules: an ASK CD module that processes music, a radio tuner, a navigation module, and a module that handles the visuals of the user interface. Only the BMW 7 Series has it installed (E65, E66).

There are three versions of the 1st generation iDrive:

NAVI01: Between the front seats is a rotary knob controller, and the computer is in the trunk. This model’s knob stands out since it has no buttons at all. Additionally, you can tell it apart from its replacement since it can only read map CDs (not DVDs).

NAVI02: This version supports reading maps from DVDs and offers a birds-eye viewpoint view when in navigation mode, albeit a rudimentary one.

NAVI03: The ability to manage a BMW iPod Interface or a 6-CD changer with MP3 compatibility is the most prominent feature. The aerial picture appears more realistic when compared to NAVI02 (with clouds and a horizon line added). Additionally, the top of its iDrive controller now features a leather finish.

iDrive 2nd Generation: M-ASK, CCC, radio professional CD

M-ASK:

Multimedia Audio System controller is known by the acronym M-ASK. The Harman/Becker corporation makes the module. The M-ASK iDrive has a 6.6″ screen that is somewhat tiny. The M-ASK iDrive and the M-ASKII iDrive are the two M-ASK generations. There are two variants of each of the two generations: iDrive Business Navigation, often known as “Navigation system Business,” and iDrive Business, which lacks a navigation feature. There is just one disk slot on the M-ASK / M-ASKII (therefore you cannot both use the navigation function and play music from a CD). Initially, just directional arrows were visible. Later iterations added 2D maps to the display.
The following car models have the M-ASK or M-ASKII without navigation function as the default option:

⦁ BMW 5 Series E60/E61
⦁ BMW 6 Series E63/E64
⦁ BMW X5 E70
⦁ BMW X6 E71

The default iDrive module on the following automobile models is named BMW Radio CD, which is relatively rudimentary and does not have a navigation feature:

⦁ BMW 1 Series E81/E82/E87/E88
⦁ BMW 3 Series E90/E91/E92/E93

CCC iDrive:

A head unit model installed on BMW vehicles made between 2003 and 2010 is called the BMW CCC unit. The BMW CCC unit and the 8.8′′ wide-screen display for this Professional Navigation are housed in the dashboard. It was in service until around 2010 (year varies by car model), when the “CIC” version, illustrated below, took its place. A map DVD from Navteq is used in a specialized DVD drive for CCC-based systems. There are three versions of the CCC navigation:

How to determine whether your iDrive model is a CCC or another?

iDrive controller of the vehicle. The three standard iDrive controllers for CCC navigation are listed below. Based on how the home menu appears on the display. By the label affixed to the appliance. Based on how many disk slots are visible on the module’s front. Those are a few ways to spot the difference

iDrive BMW Professional CD

There is no display included with this version of iDrive. As shown in the picture below, it just has a little orange screen that shows two lines of text. Dead pixels on the display are the most common issue with these devices, which may be fixed by getting and installing an aftermarket replacement LCD.

iDrive 3rd Generation: CIC, CIC MID, Alpine, and HU ENTRY (CHAMP2)

CIC iDrive:

This is iDrive in the “CIC” form. It replaced the “CCC” version and debuted in 2009 (the exact year depends on the car type). Maps from TeleAtlas are placed on an internal hard drive for CIC-based systems (HDD). The third generation of iDrive, which includes the CIC iDrive, is the most recent. There are two different CIC versions: the standard CIC (or Navigation System Professional) and the CIC MID (or Navigation System Business). The difference between the two is in their height and their label. The CIC is almost twice as tall as the CIC MID. The CIC label will have ‘Type: HU CIC‘ on it – HU stands for the head unit. The CIC MID label will say ‘Type: HU CIC MID‘. People also mix up the CIC and CCC iDrives. The simplest way to tell the difference between the two is to look at the menu. BMW cars that were originally equipped with the CCC iDrive model can be retrofitted with the CIC iDrive. It’s done by using coding. In case you are interested, get in contact with us since we also offer this service. Your vehicle’s 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is all we require. You can get in touch with us if you reside in the UK and provide us the registration number of your car so we can look it up. The following vehicles use CIC iDrive:

⦁ 1-Series F20/F21 – 09/2011 – 03/2013
⦁ 3-Series E90/E91/E92/E93 – 09/2008 – 10/2013
⦁ 3-Series F30/F31/F34/F80 – 02/2012 – 11/2012
⦁ 5-Series E60/E61 – 11/2008 – 05/2010
⦁ 5-Series F07 – 10/2009 – 07/2012
⦁ 5-Series F10 – 03/2010 – 09/2012
⦁ 5-Series F11 – 09/2010 – 09/2012

Alpine:

The module closely resembles the HU ENTRY in terms of size and form. But the label on the module, which will specify the maker as Alpine, will allow you to identify the Alpine iDrive head unit.

HU ENTRY (CHAMP 2):

The CHAMP unit’s label, which reads “ENTRY,” and the module’s size and form are two ways to identify this system.

The connections on the rear of the unit may be somewhat different from the picture above depending on regional settings (where your car was made) and other choices on the car. However, the unit’s general appearance ought to remain constant.

iDrive 4th Generation: NBT and HU ENTRY NAV

Professional Navigation NBT:

The term “Next Big Thing” (NBT) was first used in 2012. It has a redesigned iDrive controller, a bigger HDD, more RAM, faster processing, and optional touch functionality for the iDrive controller, among other improvements. Bluetooth and USB media are handled by NBT units. With Connected Drive, BMW Online (from earlier iDrive versions) is no longer available. NBT iDrive is available on the following car models:

⦁ 1-Series F20/F21 – 03/2013 – 03/2015
⦁ 2-Series F22 – 11/2013 – 03/2015

Some of the NBT EVO ID4 characteristics are that the functionality and user interface is quite similar to NBT iDrive and the screen resolution is higher than in NBT. The map version, which will either indicate NBT XXXX or NBT EVO XXXX, is the best method to determine if you have a late NBT or an NBT iD4 System.
